Dribbling Down Memory Lane

This weekend, I was reminiscing with friends about playing on a competitive basketball team. As a point guard, I loved weaving through defenders, while my fresh kicks squeaked on the polished gym floor and my heart raced with every bounce of the ball.

As I got older, I got hooked on the March Madness college basketball tournament. I loved cheering on the Texas Longhorns, and teasing my friends about how I won our fantasy league two years in a row.

My New Adrenaline Fix

Fast forward to today—I’m still a fan of the game and have a Michael Jordon basketball card stashed inside a New Kids on the Block fanny pack in the back of my closet.

But this spring, I’m also watching and participating in another thrilling contest — the Texas primary elections. I like to think of them as the March Madness playoff games.

The Primaries = The Playoffs

Picture this: candidates from various “teams” step onto the court—er, ballot box—to vie for a shot at the “big show” on General Election Day. It’s like the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, and Final Four rolled into one. And instead of buying an expensive ticket to the tournament, you just need your free voter registration card to attend.

Then, you watch as the bracket drama ensues. Candidates face off in run-offs, and only the winners from each party advance to the general. The stakes are high, and Cinderella stories emerge.

Championship Game = General Election

At the end, the nation watches the top two showdown for the highest honors, including the president, governor, or mayor. Fans (voters) sport their team colors and mascots—red or blue, elephant or donkey. And family dinners get awkward with the notion of rivalries.

When the buzzer sounds and all votes have been tallied, the winners celebrate. And if they are classy, shake hands with their opponents and thank them for the good game. s March!

Remember

Every Election is a Shot at Victory. Vote this March!
